Our History
The Carrie Tingley Hospital for Children was established in 1936 in Hot Springs (now known as Truth or Consequences) in New Mexico. It was named after Governor Clyde Tingley’s wife, Carrie Wooster Tingley, due to her dedication to helping children. The hospital's primary goal was to provide high-quality orthopedic care to low-income children in New Mexico, specifically related to the early twentieth-century polio outbreaks. It is well-known that Carrie Tingley Hospital treats all patients, regardless of their race or financial status. This was considered progressive, as many medical facilities in the United States were segregated then.
